US troops 'monitoring Rafah crossing'

NBC anchorwoman and chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell said Sunday that US military officers from the Corps of Engineers had been stationed on the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing in order to prevent "arms smuggling from illegal tunnels" by Palestinian fighters. “ And there are US Army Corps of Engineer personnel on the ground right now on the Egypt side looking at the tunnels to see how Egypt could be reassured that there won't be continued smuggling through on that," she said on Meet the Press.

The rotten state of Egypt is too powerless and corrupt to act

President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt a country where 'the idea of service has simply ceased to exist'

The true disgrace of Egypt, however, is not in its response to the slaughter in Gaza. It is the corruption that has become embedded in an Egyptian society where the idea of service – health, education, genuine security for ordinary people – has simply ceased to exist. It's a land where the first duty of the police is to protect the regime, where protesters are beaten up by the security police, where young women objecting to Mubarak's endless regime – likely to be passed on caliph-like to his son Gamal, whatever we may be told – are sexually molested by plain-clothes agents, where prisoners in the Tora-Tora complex are forced to rape each other by their guards.

Report: Egypt stabbed Hamas in back

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Saturday blamed Hamas for provoking Israel into attacking the strip. "Egypt warned for a long time, and someone who ignores warnings is responsible for the outcome," said Gheit.

Egyptians looking for the "good side" of America

There is a sense among many Egyptians that Obama could restore the rush of warm feelings most Arabs held for the United States during the Clinton administration and erase the bad feelings generated by the Iraq war and the perceived pro-Israeli bias of the Bush administration.

A word of caution to the Egyptians - don't bet your life on it...

Egypt threatens to retaliate for Israeli lobbying of US Congress

"Egypt has rebuffed Israeli allegations that its border police have been turning a blind eye to some smuggling from the Sinai to Hamas-ruled Gaza. Moves in Congress to trim some of the $2 billion in annual aid to Egypt have been described by Cairo as the result of Israeli lobbying."

Egypt: Israeli lobby harms US relations

"The latest months have seen the Israeli lobby's efforts to harm Egypt's interests with the Congress," Ahmed Aboul Gheit told reporters. "The Israeli lobby inside the (U.S.) Congress was behind some positions adopted by Congress and the Israeli media campaign in the last few months falls within this trend."

Egypt can't just now have figured this out ~ a major objective of The Lobby is to have every Arab and Muslim country pissed off with the United States. And, they're doing a very good job of it.
