Death toll rises to 224 in Indian temple stampede

The death toll was revised upward after police found that several local people had taken their dead relatives home and later cremated them without informing authorities.

144 killed in stampede at Hindu temple

Mother's grief ... at least 144 people were killed and scores injured today in a massive stampede at a Hindu temple in Rajasthan.

The disaster occurred as more than 25,000 worshippers clamoured to reach the 15th century Chamunda Devi temple in Jodhpur's hill-top Mehrangarh Fort at the start of Navaratri, a major Hindu festival.
