What Kind of Security Will This Barbarism Bring Israel?

Israel has killed and wounded almost four thousand men, women and children so far in its assault on Gaza; it has entombed whole families together in the ruins of their homes.....

These are the scenes that every Palestinian and every Arab around the world sees every single day on the uncensored, unedited, unfiltered and relentlessly, brutally honest coverage broadcast on the Arabic Al-Jazeera channel. Unlike the US and UK networks, Al-Jazeera has correspondents and camera crews all over Gaza; they are Arabs, some of them are Palestinians, and they all live among the people whose suffering they record for the whole world to see; they can communicate with them in their own language and in the language of the audience as well. The coverage continues continuously 24 hours a day.

All this to make Israelis feel secure? What security is this kind of barbarism ever likely to gain them?

Sources in the defense establishment said Defense Minister Ehud Barak instructed the Israel Defense Forces to prepare for the operation over six months ago, even as Israel was beginning to negotiate a ceasefire agreement with Hamas. According to the sources, Barak maintained that although the lull would allow Hamas to prepare for a showdown with Israel, the Israeli army needed time to prepare, as well.

No reprieve from settler violence in sight

The Israeli government, which has encouraged the building of settlements in the West Bank in violation of international law since it occupied the territory in 1967, stated on Monday that it will act to remove settlement outposts. These are structures built in violation of international agreements, without official permission and against Israeli law but with tacit support from the Israeli authorities. In 2005, an Israeli government investigation found that state authorities had colluded with the settlement movement to establish over 100 outposts in the West Bank, donating US$17 million to such projects between 2000 and 2004.

The dominant elements behind the riots in Akko seem to be Jewish instigators, Northern District Police Commander, Major-General Shimon Koren, told Ynet on Sunday.

Yemen nabs 'Israel-linked' terror cell

Israeli settlers attack Rabbis guarding Palestinian olive harvest near Hebron

On Saturday, 27 September 2008, a Palestinian teenager from Aqra village southeast of Nablus City was shot dead by Israeli settlers. The Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) utterly condemns this heinous crime, and reiterates that the neglect of complaints submitted by Palestinian civilians against Israeli settlers, plus the protection provided by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) to the settlers, have encouraged the settlers to continue launching attacks against unarmed Palestinian civilians.

Of course, Israel's "investigation" into the murder disputes eye witness reports - their report claims the Shepherd's death was an "accident" caused by an unexploded shell."

Some residents say the self-styled "modesty squads" are spreading terror among those seen as straying from the strict moral code demanded of the ultra-Orthodox in the more conservative neighbourhoods of the Holy City.

Olmert indicted as deputy is accused of war crimes

On August 1 the Independent reported claims made in a book by two Israeli journalists that Shaul Mofaz in 2001 called for a death toll of 70 Palestinians a day.

A leading Israeli law professor has written to justice officials, calling for the investigation into claims – highlighted by The Independent last month – that during a briefing to army officers in May 2001, after the start of the second Palestinian uprising, Mr Mofaz ordered a daily "quota" of Palestinian deaths.

And, judging from the number of Palestinian women and children which have been murdered, the IDF did their level best to meet their quota.
