Caretaker govt warns of medical disaster in Gaza

by PIN - October 22, 2007

GAZA, The caretaker government headed by Ismail Haneyya has warned of a medical catastrophe that could endanger the lives of Palestinian patients after the closure of all operating rooms at the Shifa hospital in Gaza because of the depletion of nitrose gas used in anesthetizing patients before undergoing surgeries.

The warning came after the Palestinian health ministry announced on Sunday the closure of operating rooms in the Shifa hospital as well as medical centers in the Gaza Strip after the nitrose gas depleted and the IOA deliberately stopped to supply Gaza with this gas.

For his part, health minister Dr. Basem Naim confirmed in a press release that his ministry is attempting to procure this important gas through communicating with the Red Cross in Gaza in order to provide it, pointing out that the health sector is the most affected by the Israeli economic siege.

Dr. Naim denied Israel's allegations that it allows the entry of medicines and medical supplies to Gaza, underlining that Israel procrastinates and obstructs the entry of medicines; in addition, it imposes an economic embargo on Gaza which hinders the purchase of medical supplies.

The health minister appealed to all medical and human rights organizations to intervene immediately in order to pressure the Israeli occupation to lift the siege on the Strip and to allow the entry of necessary medicines and medical supplies to save the lives of Palestinian patients.

For his part, the manager of Shifa hospital also appealed to the world to extend a helpful hand to end this real disaster, pointing out that the Israeli occupation has rebuffed the Red Cross's efforts to end the medical crisis in Gaza.
