Carter: Diplomacy key Iran-US solution

by Press TV News - Oct 11, 2007

Diplomacy without military action is the only realistic option for Tehran and Washington, former US President Jimmy Carter has said.

In an interview with CBS News, Carter stressed that any form of attack against Iran even a limited one can have disastrous consequences for the US and we will not be supported by any other countries.

The current administration's diplomatic chill between Iran and the US should end since diplomacy is the only reasonable choice, Carter added.

"I think a military strike against Iran at this time would be completely unnecessary and counterproductive. Iran is a different proposition from what Iraq was when we attacked Iraq. It wouldn't be an easy thing to invade Iran. And where would we get the troops? We don't even have enough troops for Iraq. Where would we get them from? And I don't think we would have any other nation in the world that would join us in any sort of military adventure against Iran. So, diplomacy is the best approach!"

He said the media play a damaging role by publishing speculation about a military attack and emphasized that it would be more helpful that the US clarifies the truth of its intentions for Iran and finds some way to communicate directly with Iranians to reduce the tensions and reassure their fears that the US might not attack them.
