Perino mum on Israeli nukes

by Press TV News - Oct 10, 2007

White House press secretary has refused to acknowledge Israel's nuclear arms possession, which has been made possible through US help.

Perino refused to give an answer to Helen Thomas - commonly referred to as "the First Lady of the Press," - when she asked in a press conference on Tuesday if any country in the Middle East has nuclear arms.

"White House has a driving interest in keeping nuclear arms out of Iran. I'd like to ask you, does any country in the Middle East have nuclear arms?" Thomas asked.

"Oh, I would leave it to those countries to announce whether they do or not. I think that there's public information about that, Helen," Perino answered.

When met with Thomas' persistence Perino declared that she was not prepared to say anything beyond what has been publicly stated.

However Thomas was in no mood for Perino's weaseling, asking flatly again that, "you don't know whether any other country in the Middle East has nuclear arms? Or do you refuse to say?"

"I'll just refuse to say it," was Perino's final answer.

This comes as no surprise since the US has repeatedly voted against different resolutions calling for a nuclear weapons-free Middle East which would have demanded the Zionist regime's nuclear disarmament, and more importantly it would have pressured it into joining the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

However, in an apparent blunder on December 2006, Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert officially confessed to the regime's possession of nuclear arms, a break from its traditional policy of opacity, namely neither confirming nor denying it has nuclear weapons.

Israel is the only government in the Middle East to possess nuclear warheads which has refused to either sign the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty or accept neutral inspections of its atomic sites, posing a real threat to the peace and security of the region and the world.
